My wife Terri and I have been together since 1970, yes that's since the earth was still cooling. We have planned building a log cabin off the grid ever since we started wilderness camping back then when the Dinosaurs roomed the earth. We built it and this Blog is all about it.
In 1996 we purchased 40 acres “off the grid” in the Tobatabal wilderness in the middle of a pinion forest at 7,000 feet in the High Sierra Mountains. Soon after we made a road in we moved an old 1960 Shasta travel trailer there as our base camp. It was from here that we established the infrastructure over the years, a well was first on the list, you can’t live without water, then a solar electric system, a barn for storage then a septic system and all the while we were planning the log cabin. We had always wanted a real log cabin so we took all of the idea we liked out of the magazines and designed our own. After an extensive search we decided to have it custom build in Canada and shipped to the site where it was re-assembled in 2003. It is a custom built, fully scribed Engleman Canadian Spruce log cabin of about 1,600 square feet. We have all of the modern conveniences now, satellite TV and Internet, hot and cold running water, a refrigerator freezer and even a telephone was put into this area in 1999. Our retirement plan is to live here with nature and enjoy our years in the peace and serenity of the woods. The rule up here is that everything we purchased for this property has to be paid for in advance, including the cars and trucks, anything that comes onto the property has to be ours free and clear. We want, as few attachments to the system as possible, but of course there are always taxes.
